Avatar, the future of 3D?

Still from "Avatar" which promises to rock our 3D worlds

Sam Worthing plays Sully who plays one of these tall elf-like warriors

What is an avatar anyway? Kinda like the Matrix on purpose? Trailer for the upcoming "Avatar" film from James Cameron promise "a heroic battle to save civilization." Looks a little counter-culture to me, but wtf do I know. Doesn't seem like you can hit "appearance" so easily in this virtual world as imagined by "Titantic" director James Cameron. Also he made "the Abyss" which had some cool enough aliens and deep water scenes.

These avatars sure seem to be very immersed anyway in those blue water test tubes they are floating around in. It does open the question though of what would you really wanna be if you could be a really cool avatar--disconnected from your rl self? (Not sure I would go immediately for the Spock ears.) I don't think these guys get to hit the "appearance" pie selection and make themselves a little more stylish though.

Looks a lot more like a jacked-up shooter MMO, than a Snow Crash storyline. Maybe more like Eve?  I wouldn't expect a hot sex scene like in Lawnmower Man (check our Metaverse Essentials here). But I am sure Cameron has a few new things to throw at us -- in full 3D btw.

And Cameron also promises a new version of Titantic also in 3D. (You can also grab a free download of the Beyond the Titantic game here)

"Avatar" opens 18 Dec, but actually 17th in Oz -- so maybe we will get a few hot reviews in before the rest of the world can even see it!

I don't think the movie has

I don't think the movie has anything to do with virtual reality. The avatar in the movie is supposed to be a real entity (a synthetic mindless body). The world the central character visits through his "avatar" is a real planet. I guess the movie was made in 3D for the sake of doing special effects. But we're not supposed to notice it was made 3D! :)

ah, synthetic mindless

ah, synthetic mindless body--well, I take back the part about the sex scenes not being potentially hot then!

The meaning of avatar in this

The meaning of avatar in this movie is very different to what we use for our pixelated deputy in SL or another virtuell community. I believe avatar means in this context protector of the goodness and precursor. Humans create this huge cute looking alien to infiltrate the civilization of this planet, spy them out and destroy them to have a new earth to run down. Not to communicate peaceful with another species. But the human spies form a close bond with the aliens and defend them against the invaders. I dont believe it will be such close that you see blue ETs having sex with each other :P whatever this means. This movie is more about spirituality, friendship and the combat against a technologically outclassed enemy. I clearly see a connection to the spanish conquest of South America.
