Cannery and Dump Areas to be Deleted

Dagger Eye to be deleted with Cannery and Dump areasFurther to the "void/openspace crisis" and related negative impact we anticipate across the grid, we are reducing our number of areas in Second Life and are actively in the process of consolidating our regions.  As a result of immediate changes, we will be deleting the Cannery and the Dump areas.

We are very concerned that the Second Life economy from  our perspective (not the 67% of growth part that CEO Mark Kingdon sees) is flat and this "void crisis" will have a very negative effect on non-land and non-porno sales inworld. We further, are not convinced, that Linden Lab is doing anything constructive to 1) keep people inworld or 2) market/promote SL to attract new users. Recent announcement from LInden Lab indicate that the company is focusing on enterprise and government markets were it sees better potential.

Linden is scribbling their line in the matrix on the void pricing as per comments released by Mark Kingdon. Meanwhile there is a serious flurry on interest in competitive virtual world platforms.

We therefore are also converting 4 voids into a full sim (Greenies Lawn will become a full sim)  and deleting 2 voids completely.  We think we might use part of the Greenies Lawn sim to host art shows like Viva La Vida. Our Rezzable Visions series is now cancelled.

We are discussing the Plasma City project now, but it seems that there is enough support from builders and participants to keep this rolling along.

More changes will likely follow. We are watching the Second Life economy statistics page closely to see positive changes in:

  1. Estimated inworld business owners (over $USD 100 at least which looks flat at about 6,700 avatars per month)
  2. Monthly Spending By Amount where Sept shows 413,000 avatars spending money each month
  3. Premium accounts which has been slowly decilning.
  4. New Islands Added--this one should be most interesting in Nov as the impact of the voids is removed and sims start getting decommissioned.

Probably Linden Labs will get rid of this page of Economic Statistics all together--citing that it will improve our SL experience by our not seeing declining numbers or something...

The Cannery was actually our first sim on the Second LIfe grid and has been used for many art shows especially featuring virtual world photography. We latter created the Dagger Eye Gallery which has been displaying stunning photography from top Flickr photographers including Melodious Source and Laurah Oh in a very unusual space that materializes only when visitors are present.. The Cannery has also been home to Poision Candy and the Tox1c boutique. We will be looking for good places to position some of this merchandise.

The Dump has been a random place for wanderers. We have some casual games there including a gladiator battle ring (find the chalk body outilne with a sword in it on South East Corner), sewer boat racing, dancing with fire gods and of course the tornado that pitches out freebies. There are still tons of freebies there btw, so check it before it gets zapped.

Some photos from Flickr that remind us of the Cannery and Dump from parties, events and general exploring. If you wanna add your favorite photos from these areas it would be great! Please add to our Rezzable SL Flickr group and tag "byebye"

* I _so_ need to snapshot the pig tonight, it's one of the most beautiful things I've seen inworld. (Must admit, I even prefer it over Black Swan, but that could be my twisted sence of humour.) Looking at it's scale, if it's not primmy, would it not be suitable way above Greenies Lawn? (So that it seems the pig flew away from the lawn?)

Sad to hear, but understandable

I had a feeling that this latest nonsense from the Lindens might have some adverse affect on Rezzable, and it will be sad to see the Cannery and the Dump get... well... dumped.  I agree that making Greenies Lawn a full sim and starting to use it to host special events would be a good idea; both Greenies sims seem to have been a LOT busier since the entrance fee was rescinded (I can't tell you how happy I am to see lots of people ooh-ing and ahh-ing around Greenies again), but the Lawn usually seems to have fewer people in it than the house.  Hosting art projects, special events, and so on in the Lawn would help drive up traffic in both sims, I would think.  I agree with Vint too, by the way--it'd be neat to have the pig salvaged somehow somewhere.  (I love Pink Floyd's "Animals" album, so it was a big tongue-in-cheek moment to see the virtual pig flying over the virtual Battersea Powerstation).

Any word on exactly when the last day will be for the Cannery and the Dump?

that's all. :)

Keep your chins up

The fat lady hasn't sang on this issue yet. There will be a lot of people now considering consolidation anyway, I know I am because it is not just the price, it's the way the Lindens have so far refused to acknowledge their role in this fiasco but the economy is far from dead and hopefully the new deal with The Big Spaceship will attract new customers although there's no indication yet of how long it's going to be before we start seeing the effects of that.

This is Terrible

I'm really bummed to hear this.  The are certainly a lot of art galleries in SL, but this had been one of the most original, well managed locations out there.  I wonder if the Lindens really care what damage they are doing to reputable businesses that add something truly special to the mix of what Second Life has to offer.  I mean, I've seen them use Rezzables images on their front page of the website, but they can't look past their greed to return the favor of supporting the same group that boosted their "tourism" numbers.  If I hadn't already been an SL Resident, you bet that I would want to join upon seeing places like Greenies and Black Swan and the Cannery!  Hope there is some sort of compromise to be reached about all this, but past actions along these lines by LL has made me a cynic.  Good luck to the Rezzables team!

 The Dump The Cannery

Sad and bummed

I am really sad to see the Cannery go, as it was the only gallery apart Avatrait that offered me to display my work (didn't have the chance to check the Dump). What sucks even more is that it was an awesome place for established artists as well as new emerging artists to show their work. It's a page of SL's art history going in fumes with that fiasco.
