A Vision for Second Life Departs

Princeton is dropping 4 sims in Second Life as a result of the OpenSpace fiasco. More info on what is going into the digital void here at Primperfect blog:

"But for me, a key point of the loss of the Princeton voids is not the disappearance of the installations, stunning as they are. It’s the loss of the exhibition space and, underlying that, the fact that one of Second Life’s most prestigious institutions and supporters is quietly scaling down."

Further, when you think about what Kingdoom is trying to position SL as, Princeton leaving is particularly ironic. LL is focusing on enterprise, education and hobbyists--which is sorta what Princeton, NJ irl actually looks like. So the wonderous interaction of corporate campuses, higher education and sex starved soccer moms seems to be the myopic vision of the leadership at LL. But now irl that model is rejecting SL as a good place to flex it's virtual muscle and burn its real money in these difficult economic times.

How many other sims are going in December? LL is hiding the statistics now!

Rezzable will also drop another full sim in December, Cascade, which will leave us with 7 public sims: Greenies Home, Greenies Lawn, Black Swan, Tunnel of Light, Carnival of Doom, Crimson Shadow and dat plaz for dem Hobos. We are continuing to watch the engaged user activity level which we measure roughly by the number of avatars that spend money inworld each month (417,000 in November and flatish in 2008).  While we are seeing good visitor traffic across these areas, we are not able to recover all the costs to produce and maintain high-quality content. We are seriously reviewing our overall SL presence during January 09.
