The recent news of Rezzable’s withdrawal from SL has evoked a mixture of emotions from the public. Their collection of sims are some of the most well known across the grid; more impressive is that the major landmarks – the Black Swan, Crimson Shadow, and Kings to name a few – were focused on art and architecture, with merchandising taking a secondary position. A number of people have responded to the announcement with sorrow and well wishes. Others have reacted… Well, let’s just say they’ve reacted.
I can’t speak to the reasons behind the angry comments left on the blog. My involvement until now has been indirect, working with Nocturne Modelling Agency to produce fashion shows in their various sims. The most ‘interaction’ I’ve ever had with RightAsRain was when there was a miscommunication and he accidentally flung the Digital Alchemy models across and out of Kings Rezzable. (As you might imagine, the memory is more enjoyable in memory than it actually was.)
That being said, some people have acted out of line. Maybe it’s the way I’ve been raised; maybe it’s because I’m striving to be more respectful to others in general. But in my view, dancing around in a public forum thumbing your nose just paints you as ugly as those that ticked you off. Seeing a glorified “I told you so” is just as irritating to a bystander as it is to the receiver. Honestly, if you wish to make a point and be taken seriously, there are much better ways, and they are not hard to pursue.
There are probably people out there that think because I’m “naïve” about the Rezzable situation that I should shut-up and butt-out. As a blogger, I should just focus on fashion, events or activities and not stick my fingers where they “don’t belong”. However, I’m not just a writer- I’m a human being, and one that thinks we should be conscientious of our actions, especially towards others. This pertains to whether or not you’re speaking to them in person, over the phone, or through an anonymous online account. Yes, there are crappy people out there – I’ve had my unfortunate share of run-ins with the ilk. Yes, there are stubborn jerks in the world- I can be one of them on a bad day. Yes, their actions can be absolutely infuriating to the point where you could just punch babies.
But reacting poorly just brings you down to their level. And when some people are grieving over something, such displays – no matter how right you are – makes you look like a bad guy. In the case of Rezzable, the disappearance of some incredible places is upsetting to people- due to money matters, creative masterpieces are facing the chopping block. This is a reason we hear too often and why art, music and physical education programs are struggling in our real lives; for it to invade our worlds and our imaginations can be deeply unsettling. As I’ve said, the reasons for lashing out may be valid- but right now, the high road needs to be taken.
To RAR and the rest of Rezzable, I can imagine this was a difficult decision. A lot of time, energy, money and emotion have been invested to their SL presence. It would be my hope that they are working with the architects, artists and possibly groups such as Will Your Work to preserve some of these virtual treasures on the grid. But I don’t know what’s going to happen, and I know pitching a fit about it is not going to sway the situation. At this point, I feel there’s only one thing to do:
To the whole team, I wish you the best in your future endeavors, whatever they may be. I hope you learned a lot from your time in Second Life and that you will use the experience you gain to be a stronger, wiser company and individuals. Thank you for the beauty you helped make possible in our virtual landscape- the joy, intrigue and reflection they brought to the residents will not be soon forgotten.
To the rest of the public, if you haven't visited the lands of Rezzable, see them now before they disappear. Too soon, they will simply be memories and snapshots.

A Monument to Hubris
Wed, 07/15/2009 - 15:20 — Prokofy Neva (not verified)Oh, grow up.
Rezzable doesn't deserve to be treated with the kid gloves you imagine just because somehow you benefited from them personally.
RightAsRain has been a nasty, bullying ass to critical reporters -- even to reporters simply doing the very basic job in the early days of probing him as to just exactly what his business model was. They were right to.
It seems his business model was to threaten reporters, suck or placate some people (like yourself evidently), spend a lot of money to feel like Big Man on Campus, constantly and cynically ridicule land owners and the entire model of land dealing in SL, snark at the Lindens constantly, treat some builders unbelievably badly, make a few wildly over-rated and kitschy sims that really had no interactivity in them and then -- fold up his tent.
It was an operation driven by the ideology of "Free" and the notion that you don't need to rent or merchandise to meet costs, even. That some other magic will come to save you just because you are fabulous. It's a collossal monument to ego, hubris -- and technocommunism, or whatever term you'd use to describe for spending money and not making money. You can call it "The High Road". I call it a patent folly.
You'd never apply these silly restrictions and demands to be "respectful" in real life if you saw such folly, why you think you should do it in SL is beyond me.
eep!
Wed, 07/15/2009 - 18:17 — Ganymedes Costa...I cant believe Rezzable is leaving, darn...
I will deeply miss the dark beauty of Crimson Shadow as much as I've missed the creepy Toxic Gardens (immensely)...
What about Greenies? I should try and grab a copy of the frog prince and the floating pig (if that's still out there somewhere?) and attempt some more scenery pics before those poof off too.
Because real adults see the bigger picture-

Maybe we should apply these restrictions and limitations to real life. Maybe we should, instead of foaming at the mouth and spreading shit all over the news and media, compose ourselves. You are so blinded by your wrong that you cannot see the other people affected here besides RaR. By focusing on only your own anger, you ultimately let the 'bad guy' win. This isn't just RaR leaving- this is something a lot bigger than him. And if you can't see that, it's your folly.
Put it this way- just because one person is a jerk doesn't give you the right to be one. Especially when it hurts other people than the original offender. I don't care what soap opera or tabloid says otherwise.
Thanks for reading it fully through, too, especially about the part where I haven't really benefitted personally.
Prok, you are wrong and out

Um, Terry, dear, I'm not
Fri, 07/17/2009 - 12:09 — Prokofy Neva (not verified)Um, Terry, dear, I'm not "angry" or "foaming at the mouth". I'm merely stating plain facts here. The Emperor has no clothes. There was never a business model. The Freetard Republic does not work.
Yes, um, I see that RaR is leaving and laying off a lot of workers. How many? Dozens? all left high and dry? Yes, it's bigger than him. How much bigger? And supposedly around these elitist, paid, top-notch builders there was a "community" -- perhaps a few dozen more hangers-on as there always are groupies for any road show. And? We're supposed to believe this is "bigness"?
You're claim to be a "real adult" and see "the bigger picture" seems absolutely pathetic -- because it just seems you've been shafted by your hero and can't see it. I'm not getting this.
Quick--somebody call the waaaaaahmublance!
Sun, 07/19/2009 - 07:27 — Anonymous (not verified)Prick--er, I mean, Prok--if ever you sat at your computer and raged about why everyone attacks you...
If ever you wondered why you're a favorite target of individual griefers and organized groups of griefers alike...
If ever you wondered why you're ostracized, laughed at, ridiculed, and shunned by the SL community at large...
You are continuing to prove them right. Over... and over... and over... and over.
Grow up, and give it a rest. Your vitriol is tiresome and your childish rants and bullying are EXTREMELY annoying. No one likes the ass across the street screaming "I told you so!" at the top of their lungs; but everyone is happy when that ass gets hit by a bus. Stop making yourself such a tempting target, and you may see people warm up to you... well, someday.
