Newcomer’s first question in SL: Why do I want to be here? That’s the same question as with any other software. Do I really want to climb this learning hill? (We geeks call it a learning curve to make it sound easy.) The answer comes by exploring what you can do. If you like what you find, you will probably want to climb that learning hill.
The Hobo Helpers group is developing the HH Travel Service to make it easy for newcomers explore the parts of Second Life that appeal to them. We want to help the newcomers will find what they seek.
Who would be interested in HH Travel Service?
1. Community Gateways, the Lindens and others who want to help newcomers find their Second Life destinies
2. Destinations -- places that want to attract people, especially newcomers. That would include
- Music venues
- Malls
- Role-playing estates
- Educational estates
- Business estates
- Museums
- Art galleries
- Others (TBD)
3. People interested in rail and other transportation models in SL.
Overview
The service consists of strategically placed travel desks with name "HH Travel Service" and suggested destinations offered by map givers in the form of cycling posters or ticket prims. The map givers do not give landmarks, but use llMapDestination to present a map with the TP point selected. This presentation method displays a map even if the user does not have preferences set for automatic accept/display of LMs.
The user can immediately see whether the parcel has a crowd. The user only needs to click the Teleport button to go.
Leadership: Hobo Helpers (with Hobo Junction)
Hobo Helpers already provide newcomer help. And we have a large collection of destinations as landmarks in the Hobo Kit (material for newcomers developed by Hobo Junction and Hobo Helpers).

Status
A demonstration version is at the HH Travel Service Office on Cookie. All demonstration items are full perm and offered under Creative Commons license - attribution only. You are welcome to take copies of the equipment and scripts and to use them for your own promotions or in conjunction with the HHH Travel service. The travel desk gives a notecard with full instructions on how to mod a poster mapper to promote any venue.
Also at the Travel Service Office, we have set up a Music Zone to offer a selection music venues and easy travel to them. The music zone will have multiple posters with multiple music venues as soon as we get them.
Future
In time, we hope to have too many zones to put them all out at once on Cookie. Our solution: put zones into holodeck scenes with rez-command panels like therse
Additional specialized offices may be set up by our affiliates. In that case, we would offer poster-mappers to these offices, providing them with additional traffic.

Mon, 02/01/2010 - 21:14 — Mikelk1How about displaying posters by your destination categories? Travel "office" would have categories to select from, then those categories would have sub-categories which would have posters. Like a good travel agent the poster would have a picture, a description, a Fodor's/Michelin/Amazon 5 star rating, then ticket.
