The network effect in Second Life is not as durable as that famous effect that so nurtured AT&T. Second Life is made up of many networks. It is lumpy. Communities form strong networks. But the communities are not all strongly connected. Some pieces could break off and run their own world.
This article continues previous articles about the implications of OnLive for the future of Second LIfe.

Videography is Dispersable
Videography is one kind of activity that could split off into its own universe. A group of people working on a video will certainly function as a temporary community. But that community can function by itself in most of what it is doing. Starting production will require a larger community – you have to audition actors and find builders. But then – assuming the new world works like Second Life – there would be some advantages in moving to a new universe.
- Controlled set – controlled lag
- Controlled communications –
- Your choice of audio tech
- Your textures, no copyright issues
- Your network – Your network issues
- You handle your own audio with Skype or Teamspeak
The tech taking us to that possibility
OpenSimulator: (open source) allows users to create a virtual world similar to Second Life. It does accommodate the hypergrid feature.
- OpenSim is still in alpha. You don’t pay your money, but you do take yor chances.
- OpenSimulator has many communities

EMJ left a comment on a previous article in this theme:
“… saw your blog post on the cloudy future of virtual worlds. Like most posters on the subject, you seem unaware of the Cobalt/Croquet technology being developed at Duke under a NSF grant. It's been a slow go so far but the technology represents a significant departure from the client/server model that makes it possible for these worlds to be "owned" by companies who then charge the rest of us for the privilege of constructing them.
"Briefly, Cobalt is a peer to peer system -- think Bit-Torrent. It should also easily scale up to large "audiences." Best of all - the participants will be the "owners." I think it will be this sort of technology that will enable the 3D web of the future.”
---------------------------------------------
Actually, I have been hearing about Croquet since way back in ’07. Here is an impressive demo they released then.
Current status of Cobalt/Croquet: Available in pre-alpha build; May 2009: Open Cobalt alpha release candidates being tested. At that rate of progress, I don't see it as of any interest to the general public in the near future. And I am not sure the general public will want to buy machines powerful enough to support it. It may turn out to be of interest mainly to us techies.

Second Life
Mon, 07/27/2009 - 21:59 — Raekwon Samson (not verified)I love the fact that Saint Leo University is investing the time and technology into a virtual world such as Second Life, especially since their University is a leading figure in the online university revolution that is going on right now. In linking the two together (digital education and a comprehensive digital world), they are showing that they are committed to the fact that online education can seem more "real" than ever with the help of the Web 2.0 revolution.
