Serious use of VR takes outworlding

Host Robert Bloomfield interviewed Dick Dillon, Senior Vice President / Executive Vice President of Preferred Family Healthcare, Inc. on the latest Metanomics show. The discussion was about substance abuse treatment within Second Life.    Robert Bloomfield is the Nicholas H. Noyes Professor of Management and Professor of Accounting at the Cornell University Johnson Graduate School of Management.

Later Dr. Bloomfield interviewed Michelle Kandalaft and Dan Krawczyk.   Dan Krawczyk is an assistant professor of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas. Dr. Krawczyk’s laboratory is at the Center for Brain Health. His primary interest is in the neural circuitry associated with reasoning and he has begun work on aging. The Center for Vital Brain Aging is focused on developing techniques to help people maintain cognitive vitality until the end of their lives.  Much of the discussion in this session dealt with people on the autism spectrum.

Presentations like these are just as important outworld as they are inworld.  And there are lots more people to hear the presentations there.    If virtual reality can help in either of these areas, it would probably do so at much lower cost.  And the costs involved affect everybody.

Fortunately, Metanomics is already well prepared for reaching the outworld.  Their shows are regularly streamed live to various sites in Second Life and are also available on the web from the Metanomics site.   (The interview mentioned above is ready for you to watch.)   They also use a ChatBridge  technology to share local chat from the Main Stage, from all Event Partners, and from the Web.  Thus, everyone can participate in the text discussions and Q/A conversations that elaborate on the primary presentation (in voice).

Metanomics goal

“Our goal is to help facilitate discussion and insight into the serious uses of virtual worlds for enterprise, education, content development, research, and policy-making.“

The adventures of Asherella, the Super Princess

Produced by Chris Lanning (outworld) aka Neighbor Criss (inworld)

This show follows the adventures of  Asherella, the Super Princess.  In “each episode, young Samantha Royal, along with her parents and older brother, Bobby, are vacationing at a Disney resort. Inevitably, trouble breaks out!”   And is resolved, of course, by Asherella and Bobby.

This show is a family affair, with several members of the Lanning family playing roles.

Google Reader update: an old idea that finally works

Google Reader lists recommendations for content that I might be interested in.   I ignored that for a while because websites have been offering me useless recommendations for years.   But Leo Laporte, in a recent TWIG podcast, finally convinced me to try again.  And Google did it right.   It knew that I was interested in Second Life blogs.  It gave me several good recommendations.

That is another reason why I am stepping up my use of Google Reader.   And a hint about how Google is helping to  build web communities.

Free Guided Tours of King Tut Virtual

Heritage Key is offering free guided tours of King Tut Virtual.

Meral Crifasi will offer two tours a day, guiding people in the use of virtual reality and in the exploration of the Valley of the Kings.  This descriptive web page carries an illustrative video and instructions on how to get started on the tour.
Good move.  VR is about people.   It won’t be real without people.   Real people.  Like Meral.

You can follow their reports by subscribing to the blog at their outworlding site.  I already put the blog in my Google Reader subscription list.
