Crap Mariner is looking for suggestions on what the Linden Labs can do to foster the music business in SL. This blog (and some following) will organize a few related things that I know about. But not just about what the Lindens can do. Also about what other people are already doing. And how the Lindens can become irrelevant, without really trying.
Suggestions on SLCC Music Track project
Promotional messages.
These are vital to music and other entertainment businesses. Many performers still rely on SL groups to send IMs and notices to fans. I have discussed some of the problems of using SL groups for this purpose in previous articles.
The most obvious problem is the limit of 25 groups for an account. The obvious solution to that is one of the independent notice vendor:, Hippo “groups” or Subscribeomatic.
Most musicians could use Subscribeomatic at their free level. My own opinion is that Independent notice vendors are already better than anything that Linden Labs is likely to be able to do with an effort to combine notifications with a group messaging system that also tries to support more complex group operations.
The upshot on promotional messages
The Lindens don’t need to do anything to make group communications work better for promotion of events. Just cooperate with the independent vendors to make subscribing, unsubscribing, and message handling easier.
IM, group IM, and voice IM. Give up. Give the job to Gmail and Skype.
This suggestion is not specific to music. It applies to any business. The communication infrastructure is essential to any business. Imagine a business considering relocation to a business park. How would they react if they found that the phone service, mail service, and messaging services were no better than what we put up with in Second Life?
If you wonder why I bring that up, read the recent Linden blog: Improving Quality of Group Chat. And don’t miss the comments from users
.A number of us have already given up on these SL services for important work. For notices we have already moved to Hippo or Subscribeomatic. The people I work with a lot are on my contact lists in Skype and Gmail. Many of them have Gmail and Skype contact IDs for their SL avatars. Others just give out their “real” names. So we are no longer waiting for that “slim client” SL tried to develop a while back. We already have normal, business-like contact with the people we work with. This kind of contact:
- Reliable message service
- Reliable instant messages
- Reliable voice communication
- Intelligible speech
- Always on, always ready
These are things that business people expect. But please note that I am not asking Linden Lab to provide these things. I already know how to get these things from systems that work. All I want from Linden Labs is an easier way to use the contacts:
- Share my SL contact lists with Gmail and Skype.
- Have my SL client accept plug-ins for Gmail and Skype so I can access and use these resources from the client much as I use the native IM system.
Actually, I don’t care whether Linden Labs provides the client or (more likely) some independent provider develops and offers it. My friends and I are already trying new clients. We'd rather switch than wait,
Resources for more extensive communication.
Google Calendar. Venues are making increasing use of Google Calendars to handle schedules. See my previous description.
Google groups, Ning The ART Players make extensive use of Google Groups for scheduling, exchanging scripts, and other forms of collaboration. Broadway Live Island just set up a social network section on Ning.com.
In summary, Linden Labs is becoming irrelevant to communications among Second Life residents. Pretty soon it won’t matter what they do. (Are you listening, Godot?)
