In no particular order:
1. B. Kiddo - The Cats Will Play
B. Kiddo's 'The Cats will Play' is a tribute to 'Grindhouse'. Grindhouse, the movies? Not only, it was also an area in New York, famous for it dancing theatres with stylish stippers. In Second Life, what would be the one thing a sexy lady wears and does not take off ever? Of course: guns, ears & a tail! Would somebody contact the 007 productions with this idea, so the next Bond movie featurs Catwoman, please?
Aweomse because it has girls, guns, neko ears & tails brought to a nice flavour with a touch of silhouettes and a whole lot of kick ass music. (go vote)
2. Chantal Harvey - Arthole presents: Orientation
A capture of ideas grown in Arahan Claveau and Nebulosus Severine's ingenius minds, this machinima directed by Chantal Harvey is what George Orwell would have thought of in stead of 1984 if he knew about 'Soylent Green' and 'Second Life'. Oh... and bunnies! On the beautiful tunes of 'Guantaremera’ this is a shocking - but funny - machinima.
Awesomeness rating for lot's of bunnies and a new look on classic ideas. (go vote)
3. Silver & Goldie Goodman - Swift Kick Moms for Truth
"Swift Kick Moms for Truth" is a one-minute "machinima" video featuring virtual versions of Obama’s grandma and McCain’s mother scolding the candidates for their deceptive ads. Lead-in by virtual Tom Brokaw. Created in the Second Life® virtual world by Machinima by Silver and Goldie, with voice artist Mark Winston.
Awesome why? Watch both presidential candiates cry from shame, as their 'grannies' reprimande them. (go vote)
4. Krrish Spyker - The Visitor
Directed by Krrish Spyker for machinima production house KS Productions, 'The Visitor' is a well thought off, visually stunning virtual story filled with darkness, adventure and ghosts. Neat accents & vocals - with subs for those who need it, no, not that kind of subs!?!! - make this a top production.
We're in awe because it's such a fascinating storing, and we have a secret crush on the ghost. (go vote)
"The Visitor" from Krrish Spyker on Vimeo.
5. Halden Beaumont - Beyond Magic
Halden Beaumont - and his human Hugo Almeida - created this visually stunning* piece of machinima to showcase our virtual world's 'strong points'. Potential: Communication, Education, Knowledge and Hope in Second Life. (* it contains footage shot at Rezzable's Black Swan)
We would have loved this one even if it did not feature Black Swan for it's overview of Seond Life's strenghts. Great 'quick introduction to'. (go vote)
6. Bobby Lee Linden: Public Service Announcement #1
Bobby Lee Linden (no relation to the Lindens of California) is a good old boy from the trailer park. Always has a beer in hand. He is the nephew of Older the Elder and refers to Older as his "drinkin' uncle." He bakes chocolate cupcakes that have hallucinogenic effects, especially on Lady Letitia. He does public service announcements about various introductory issues in Second Life. His 'Public Service Announcement #1' is virtual comedy of the best kind: where & how to attach your penises, when should I get it out, when should I leave it in inventory and some quick tips about poseballs.
Absolutely Awesome because the 'LMPAO' acronym was probably invented especially for this machinima. Or should that be LMPO? ;) (go vote)
7. Dizzy Banjo - Message in a Bottle at SL5B
Footage from the SL5B exhibition 'Message in a Bottle' by Dizzy Banjoy and Lillie Yifu. A colourful spectacle with music Dizzy wrote especially for the machinima. A collection of 'positive messages' about our virtual pasts and hope & dreams for it's future. Something that everybody that has a 'does Second Life have a future' dip should watch!
Astonishing in it's awesomeness for bringing real life positive testimonies from Second Life's residents. The wide variety of accents is a nice and fascinating bonus. (go vote)
8. Irah Anatine - SLoundtrack
An captivating intro about the meanings of first & second life, lonelyness, happyness, joy, weaping, futures, pasts, ... illustrated by a mixture of images, of which most are Second Life machinima ones. Depending on how you are feeling now, Irah Anatina's SLoundtrack will make you burst out in tears, or burst out in happy laughter.
Awesomeness lies within the beautiful composition of images and the soft, comforting voice that tells a whole lot of truths. (go vote)
Miss Anatine asked us to redraw her 'SLoundtrack' from voting in favour of Halden Beaumont's 'Beyond Magic', as Halden is Machinima Director of her 'Babel Project'. It would be unfair to transfer the 40 votes Irah already acquired, so those will be rendered void. Miss Anatine saw no problem in leaving her machinima up for your viewing please, so please, enjoy:
9. Nitwacket - Sucker
Pyewacket Bellman - also known as 'Nitwacket' - created this 'vampire music video' especially for Vampira Kanno's song 'Sucker': 'Vamp and I met in Second Life when we were both very new. During 2007 - the year of "The Great Lag" - we struggled with the Second Life learning curve in an attempt to create a "live" format for her music in world. We never did figure that one out, so I decided to learn machinima.' Chosen for screening at the Cambridge Film Festival, this is certainly one to watch!
Awesomeness rating for sexy vampire, great song, lots of wings and dazzling view points. (go vote)
"Sucker" - Second Life Music Machinima - HD from Nitwacket Machinima on Vimeo.
10. Torley Linden - Watch Cat Heads Roll
No need to introduce Torley 'Watermelon' Linden, but Torley felt the need to showcase some Second Life functionability to us. Containing Dynamic realtime shadows & per-pixel lighting, Havok 4 physics, WindLight atmospheric rendering and sculpties this video is a humerous 'show off' of Second Life capabilities. Torley's beloved Ravenelle is starting as the cute dancing kitty.
(Awesomeness)² because of the typical Torley 'happy happy joy joy' atmosphere. Lovely colours, high tempo and shadows! Shadows!! (go vote)
11. Claus Nehmzow - Cigna / vielife health education in Second Life
Cigna and vielife partnered with Method to develop a virtual extension of their health coaching service. This machinima by Claus Nehmzow captures how this can be implemented: in-world voting, presentations, virtual dinner tables, foodlabel explanations, 'whack a food' game, ... . Prime example of education in virtual worlds.
A worthy education video because of it nicely illustrates the different tools that are available to SL educators & their impemantation. (go vote)
12. John Escher - John Escher The Series
The story: ''Professor John Escher has earned renown for his psychology experiments on students using avatars in 3D virtual environments. After his wife, Lisa, is diagnosed with a terminal illness that confines her to the hospital, he finds himself drawn deeper into the virtual world to combat his loneliness. It exposes him to his darker side... While working on one of his experiments, Escher receives a phone call from his wife who tells him she feels certain she is about to die and begs him to come her side. He rushes to the hospital to find her bed empty. Escher confronts a doctor who hands him Lisa's two-day old directive donating her organs to waiting transplant patients. She has passed away and her body is undergoing harvesting. Escher is left shocked and grieving and on his own. But when Lisa’s avatar is hacked, he no longer knows whether she is really dead or alive… '
Absolutely confusing mixture of 'real life' and 'second life'. I'm still not sure if the humans are real, or if they were programmed by avatars. Exactly this kind of weirdness makes this show so fasinating. (go vote)
13. B. Kiddo - Play
From the same machinima director as 'The Cats will play' is 'Play', a dark & sexy music video on Frontline Assembly's 'Predator' song. Like pretty animations, hot avatars and sensual dances? Then this one is the one for you to watch!
Awesome why? We're suprised you still need to ask, but here we go: dark, sexy, pretty animations, hot avatars, sensual dances. (go vote)
14. Draxtor Despres - Gobal Justice (Second Life Style)
The International Justice Center opened recently in Second Life with a panel discussion featuring International Criminal Court prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo. What will the SL community do to further the cause of the forgotten and helpless of the world? Draxtor Despres captured some voices from the frontlines.
A must see as it's yet another perfect illustration that Second Life can serve positive, real life influencing purposes. (go vote)
15. Mescaline Tammas - Duran Duran Second Life Machinima Mashup
A short film shot in Second Life, for the DD 'Falling Down' Video Mashup Challenge. Mescaline Tammas (silenticeriver on YouTube) dedicates this video to The Creatorrrs, Duran Duran and their Second Life Fan Community.
Absolutely Duran Duran! (go vote)
16. Anthony Fontana - Avatar Meets Girl
This work is the first by the collaborative husband and wife team known as Fontana. By reflecting on individual personalities and real world identities, similarities between virtual world persona's are expressed through emotive animations common to the Second Life avatar, yet intriguingly unique. These works begin to examine the emerging language of machinima (machine-made-cinema) and its role in the continuum of traditional cinema language; machinima that documents and expresses the memories and experiences of avatars. Through a large aggregation of images, videos, and installations based on the accumulated inventory of the Fontana avatars, Anthony and Sandra supply the viewer with information that is both identifiable and indifferent; bridging connections with those who understand the virtual world phenomenon and those who have not yet begun to understand its impact on society at large.
A must watch because it's pretty hard to explain this intriguin machinima in words! (go vote)
Avatar Meets Girl from Anthony Fontana on Vimeo.
17. WBA-Advertising - CCS Combat Twilight Zone Movie
An advertisement by WBA-advertising (wba-advertising.com) for Kevtun Vandyke's CSS combat sim 'Twilight Zone'.
Awesome because it's a great display of the CSS combat system and Kevtun has build a lovely sim. (go vote)
18. Osiris Pfalz - The Building of Flower Tower 2
This machinima by Osiris Pfalz shows the building process behind the final one hour sim build project by famous Second Life artists Eshi Otawara.
Absolutely obliged to watch this one if you like Eshi's art or pretty things in general. (go vote)
The Building of Flower Tower 2 from Osiris Pfalz on Vimeo.
19. Joga Kidd - X Genesis
A fake trailer for an action series inspired by and shot in Second Life by Joga Kidd, B. Kiddo productions!. Lot's of Ghost in the Shell references, but that's nothing we're going to complain about. If the X Genesis series ever happens, we volunteer to be the first hardcore fans!
Animation & Second Life... what do you want more? (go vote)
X Genesis from Joga Kidd on Vimeo.
20. Lainy Voom - The Making of Second Life
Lainy Voom presents selected scenes from *The Making of Second Life*, the new Harper Collins from Wagner James Au, who writes about the company and the community who made the user-created virtual world here. Combining Second Life machinima with comic like stills and backgrounds, this might be the most 'visually daring' ever made SL machinima.
(Awesomeness)² because exactly that comic style makes the avatar look more 'real'. (go vote)
The Making of Second Life from TheMakingOfSecondLife on Vimeo.
21. Nitwacket - Hosoi Ichiba Machinima
Niten Altamura (Nitwacket) shot this machinima at the beautiful Second Life sim 'Hosoi Ichiba'. A young boy & girl enjoy the good weather and nice weather, until he falls asleep and she disappears. Looking everywhere for her in the night time Hosoi Ichibi, the boy misses her tremendiously. He still returns to the sim & water when he is an grown up avatar, thinking of her. If you ask us? We think LL inventory-lossed her! ;)
Astonishing must see because of the beauty captured. (go vote)

22. Akanjee Yongho & Anamkhaï Sodwind - NooB (Episode 1)
The Alienhearts like n00bs, that's for sure! Noob - by Akanjee Yongho & Anamkhaï Sodwind - is an awesome series pilot about a newbie avatar's first adventures in Second Life. From questions like 'how should I fly' to 'how can I get that girl', all is covered with nice images & dialogues: 'I'm already page up and it just... whaaa.. woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!' Mr Yongho, we're waiting for Episode 2! Lead role is for newb Charliee Courtois.
(Awesomeness)³. Contains dancing cows, no violence, some caging, kewl avatar, newb avatars, stupid avatars, smart ass avatars, humour, emotions & Second Life truths. (go vote)
23. Molotov Alva and his search for the Creator (part 1) - Cinemax
Molotov Alva leaves his existence in the real world to examine the meaning of life in Second Life. As the journey begins, he creates a series of video diaries (dispatches) to document the experiences that transform him in this brave new world. (go vote)
Not so awesome: youtube video not available in all countries. But we assume you've all seen it before! ;)
24. Lainy Voom - The Dumb Man
Miss Voom’s ‘The Dumb Man’ is a darned impressive Second Life machinima interpretation of the story written by Sherwood Anderson. It’s far beyond what we usually see in Second Life - WindLight regardless - and contains some incredible eye candy.
Awesomeness, including the incredibely creative post-processing and inworld shooting Lainy has done. (go vote)

Number 2. ORIENTATION by
Sat, 10/04/2008 - 17:38 — Ze Moo (not verified)Number 2. ORIENTATION by Arahan Claveau & Nebulosus Severine, TributeTim Kwak & Chantal Harvey is far out my favorite!
A very interesting aspect of this performance-art video is the fact that it premiered as a LIVE performance in front of a RL audience on the big white screen of REAL movie theatre in Amsterdam, The Netherlands!

Sun, 10/05/2008 - 15:28 — Arahan Claveau (not verified)The video TributeTim Kwak - Rasta Machinima Orientation has been used without the permission or knowledge of Chantal Harvey or the creators of the original performance, myself and Nebulsosus Severine, we are currently trying to discover who submitted the film and why. The title should be Arthole presents: ORIENTATION, as it is on the opening credits of the film and was the name of the original performance. We do not support or are affiliated in any way with the Rezzable Machinima Festival.
Wait - TributeTim Kwak: Rasta
Sun, 10/05/2008 - 17:01 — Amy Freelunch (not verified)Wait - TributeTim Kwak: Rasta Machinima Orientation is basically straightforward documentation of the work referred to above (Orientation by Nebulosus Severine and Arahan Claveau). This means that all of the heavy lifting in terms of casting, costumes, sets, design, and plot come from Severine and Claveau, not from Kwak. If I videotaped a RL stage play and then submitted the video to a competition without asking permission of the actors, costume designers, author of the play, director, and so on, it would be the same thing,
Kwak is certainly allowed to film anything he/she likes to, but to submit that video to a competition without the artist's permission seems artistically suspect to put it nicely; a complete rip-off to put it more flatly. If Severine and Claveau don't want to be associated with this festival, I think it is imperative on the organizers to pull this entry.

Sun, 10/05/2008 - 18:09 — nebulosus severineHere's where I am confused, too. The nomination page - http://rezzable.com/blog/voshie-paine/search-12-best-sl-machinimas -- does not mention the ORIENTATION machinima at all; I've read through the list of nominations and I don't see it. So who nominated it - why did it make it to this page if it wasn't on the other? Why was the title of the machinima changed? And why weren't Arahan, Chantal, or I contacted first or asked for consent?

Sun, 10/05/2008 - 19:47 — Pyewacket BellmanThe moderator may be taking a snooze. This was one of the first machinimas nominated - Rezzable found it all on their own. I remember because I'd seen in on Chantal's page a few days before and thought Great Choice! Didn't realize there were two of them.
But you bring up an interesting point. I hope that none of the people I nominated are mad at me! Never thought to ask first. DOH!

Sun, 10/05/2008 - 21:47 — Chantal Harvey (not verified)This is NOT DONE
.* TributeTim Kwak, who is my partner and manager, did not know of this entry and therefore can NEVER be associated or accused. WOW. He is very angry about this and he is right to be angry. His name is used without his permiussion, and anybody watching the film will see he had nothing to do with it.
* I , Chantal Harvey, creator of this machinima, did not know this film was entered. I have yet to discover the first fair contest in machinima land!
* I, Chantal Harvey, do not know who entered this machinima. I do know it was NOT TributeTim. The rasta account is for teaching inworld on rasta machinima sim, wich is owned by TributeTim.
* This machinima is uploaded in low quality - so it will stream faster. Why not look at the blip version. The title is all wrong. it is called ARTHOLE PRESENTS: ORIENTATION. - amchinima made by Chantal Harvey.
* YES IT IS A FANTASTIC MACHINIMA.
* TributeTim Kwak did not want this, do this, recognise this, steal this, he is the most straightforward honest man in sl and would never steal any film.
* The Arthole artists did not know of this entry - I would have certainly asked them first if i had entered this video.
* I wonder: voting for the best machinima of the year? voting for the best...??? Oh man, the one with the most friends will be the maker of the best machinima of the year!!! Come on, get real.
* all this is perhaps done with good intentions, and as an old saying says in hollnad: they are the worst.

Ok, Chantal, replied to
Sun, 10/05/2008 - 22:15 — Vint FalkenOk, Chantal, replied to TributeTim Kwak & Arahan in email, but will shortly repeat here:
The link that was given to us was: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qma6EyadEMo . The title there says 'Rasta Machinima - Orientation'. We looked up who the director for Rasta Machinima is, on mamachinima.eu it says the director for Rasta is TributeTim Kwak So if his name was used without permission, that is because the movie was found on 'Rastamachinima' Youtube stream, and was called 'Rasta Machinima Arthole'. (see reasoning above)
We don't recall who submitted the machinima. We opened the blog and our IM channels for 'best machinimas' nominations, and someone selected this one. I asked Arahan to let us know if he & Nebulosus & you still want to be included at all, and with which link. (YouTube, Blip, ...)
As for voting for the best, yeah, public votes is probably not fair. Our democracy is based on it, and we all know that fails sometimes. But our team just picking what we think is the best one would not have been even more unfair, right? We thought SL machinima deserved some extra exposure, and these 24 machinimas in particular. So yes, the good intentions were definitely there. If you see only bad results, well, maybe that's because the glass is half empty?
Our apologies that we did not give credit were credit was due (you) but the second or minute you pressed 'POST' on those 2 comments, the credits were already corrected. You state the correct title is 'ARTHOLE PRESENTS: ORIENTATION. - machinima made by Chantal Harvey', it would have helped tons - and probably avoided this mistakes & discussions in the first place - if the machinima on rastamachinima's steam would have been named exactly that, and not 'Rasta Machinima - Orientation'.
Except for the link to blip in stead of youtube, all info is correct now, I assume? (Feel free to check) Your name was added in the overview, blogpost & on the voting form, TributeTim Kwak's removed. So could we please stop the dicussion here, and let people enjoy this 24 great machinima's without having to read through a whole lot of angry comments?
I made an error with listing 'TributeTim Kwak' as the creator, this was definitely not intentional as I was mislead by the title of the video on Rastamachinima's Youtube stream. I'm sorry for all the troubles, and can we let 'piece' return now? As for the 'used without permision', that's not true. I just clicked the 'embed' button on Youtube to get the code. By enabling that, the one who has uploaded it to Rastamachinima youtube account gave permission to the whole internet to embed it in web pages (as long as it stays in it's Youtube frame and click leads to it's youtube page).
Vint
Thank you Vint for making the
Mon, 10/06/2008 - 01:04 — Arahan Claveau (not verified)Thank you Vint for making the corrections. I agree the title on the YouTube page was misleading but neither I or Neb made the machinima, we are just the creators of the original performance that was filmed by Chantal Harvey. But, the notion of giving up all rights of ownership just because something is posted on YouTube is erronious, sure a video can be embedded on external sites but being entered for a competition without the knowledge of any of the creators is rather odd, can you imagine this happening at an established film festival?
I must stress that my objection is not because I enjoy causing a fuss, it is about protecting something we worked very hard to create. Of course it is great when anyone appreciates something you've made and Vint's summary of the performance and machinima are very flattering but that is really not the point here. As artists we have the right to decide where our work is displayed and who represents us, and speaking solely from a personal perspective I would not ever want to be associated with Rezzable or any of their events, I have very valid reasons to feel this way which I do not need to go into here but I can assure you it is not about being ungrateful or trying to ruin anyone's fun.
If Chantal is happy for her video to remain in the competition then fine and if it gets nominated then I'm pleased for her, but I think it was a stupid idea to submit any of the films without consulting with the creators.
Maybe we also didn't make it
Mon, 10/06/2008 - 17:32 — RightAsRain RimbaudMaybe we also didn't make it clear enough--this is 2 steps--first votes on the best SL machinimas that are on the web and then show them inworld. So if it's on the web publically and the video is not ripped off then we can include without any further permission. In general this thread about Arthole film is the first time someone has asked not to get exposure for stuff posted on the web. Of course if someone wants to pull their vid out, we can accomodate that (provided we can be sure it is a bona fide request). But from what Arahan is saying it is not his/her film anyway (or is it??)
As far as artists having rights--not sure Arahan you are correct tbh. Once you perform something inworld you enter a lot of that material into the public domain under creative commons. I think you can be comfortable that you own the copyright, but effectively the SL TOS allow other people to make photos and machinima without your approval--even without attribution. It is a common practice on the web to embedd Youtube content. If you don't like that then pull the offending content. For the record, we are not representing you in any way.
In terms of protection, in fact it is quite the opposite in terms of protecting your work--it is best to have a lot of people take photos, vid and mention your performance. I think you are confusing ownership (which is copyright effectivley) with usage rights.
Check SL TOS 3.2: You also understand and agree that by submitting your Content to any area of the Service, you automatically grant (or you warrant that the owner of such Content has expressly granted) to Linden Lab and to all other users of the Service a non-exclusive, worldwide, fully paid-up, transferable, irrevocable, royalty-free and perpetual License, under any and all patent rights you may have or obtain with respect to your Content, to use your Content for all purposes within the Service. (=anyone can use anything inworld for non-commercial usage, but in practice there should be attribution and of course this does not allow for ripping stuff which is a DMCA violation and very serious.)
RightAsRain, this had been
Tue, 10/07/2008 - 18:57 — Arahan ClaveauRightAsRain, this had been resolved in private emails and you are rather late to the party, I have little to add that hasn't been said already. But I must say your overall tone comes across as rather condescending and it is extremely presumptuous of you to think that every artist would want "exposure" by Rezzable. It is also somewhat hypocritical as Rezzable are ruthless in ensuring their own rules and policies regarding copyright are strictly adhered to, issuing harsh warnings to anyone violating those standards.
So, I am sure as part of Rezzable you completely understand about protecting your investments. Although Arthole has nothing to sell, we care passionately about what we do, particularly as it has taken such an enormous amount of time and effort to create what we have. Your policies, business practices and the art you choose to promote are generally not compatible with what we do, this is not meant to be arrogant or inflammatory, it is just how it is, we simply have different priorities and aspirations.
But regardless of all that, I already said I was happy for Chantal’s video to remain in the competition as long as she was and I thanked Vint for making the corrections. There is really nothing further to discuss here without descending into the realms of pointless internet one-upmanship.
I don't have much to add to
Tue, 10/07/2008 - 21:20 — nebulosus severineI don't have much to add to Arahan's comments -- he has hit it square on the head. For the record, I am in agreement with what he has stated. As far as I am concerned, this issue has been resolved. I would also like to thank Vint for making the effort to ensure everything is correctly documented, as well as to thank Chantal and everyone else who took part in the making of ORIENTATION.
I suppose that what happens in the contest is out of our hands; so be it. I'm glad that people enjoyed the machinima and the performance that went into it. Ultimately, that's why I personally create art - to make an impact.
dunno Arahan--sure seems like
Wed, 10/08/2008 - 11:02 — RightAsRain Rimbauddunno Arahan--sure seems like you want it both ways--public appreciation and some level of control about where stuff is shown across the web. It's not realistic as you can see in this little example. If you don't want exposure by the public or sites like ours, then you should not let people make machinima in the first place. Once a vid or photo is posted on the web it is common practice for people to embed it. You can use sites that restrict rights and block embedding, but of course Youtube is a popular choice because many people watch stuff on that site increasing the exposure. Despite your comments about not being inflamatory, you are using this thread to vent your frustrations at us (in a nice enough way) about something that is unrelated to this machinima.

Even without the total lack of transparency as to how the shortlist was arrived at, the simple presence on the list of some of the worst tosh ever rendered and omission of countless works of note is enough to confirm to even the most gullable amongst us that this is a pintless nepotistic exercise in glorifying yourselves & giving prizes to your mates. Who appointed you as arbiters of quality film making anyway? I for one won't dignify this self-congratulatory exercise with a wasted vote, and I'd urge anyone else with a clue not to bother either.
