Virtual World Design Notes -- Virtual Experience (VX) is Key

gone surfline fire gods

What makes a great Second Life build? Or more specifically a public area, the kind that we like to make? What is the next level of sim-scale content creation??

Mitch Wagner is the Copper Robot and they asked me to join in a discussion about Designing Great Public Spaces in the virtual world. Show will be more or less live on August 16th at 6pm San Francisco Time (= 3am on 17th in France where I will be huddled over my netbook).  I think it is a great topic and am eager (to drink 10 espressos and stay awake) and participate.

Job Opening - Virtual Experience (VX) Designer

Growing Company - Great Opportunities

Two years ago, Jon and I were the only ones in our small office on Grey's Inn Road. We have been adding new faces and talents to our team but we still got room to expand and grow.

Challenging environment and fun team

Vint Falken or Ann moved to London back in February , moved offices to Shoreditch and  Prad has moved err like a week ago. Some of you already know this from plurk =) and our bikini thursdays. More about Prad's move in another blog but I am just delighted to announce another job openning at Rezzable.

Can you make a difference in VX

Can you design amazing 3D, online virtual areas? Can you make great experiences for visitors? This could be an ideal job for someone with energy, passion, creativity and the desire to make amazing things.

The Metaverse Has Expanded

Personal Metaveres v0.1(largely untested)

The metaverse in my understanding has really always been about data. It is about a stimulating visualization of information and the real-time connection of people through the online construct. The "virtual world" actually is a very limiting understanding of the future of the net. The physical constraint of the land model in the digital ether is unnecessary and only serves to give the noobs momentary comfort (as well as nice profitability to companies selling virtual land) Anyway, this is not the point of this post. I am writing today about how the metaverse has exploded.

So back to the metaverse. It is an increasingly complex and noisy place. It is very hard to stay connected without getting exhausted in the flow of it all. Perhaps it is a sign of my own confusion or foolish attempt at staying in the mix that I know have 3 main interfaces with the fledgling metaverse/2D Net -- my desktop computer, my laptop and my iPhone. So much for technology making my life easier. Yet, my laptop and my iPhone were given free with the mobile service contracts, so it isn't a cost issue so much. It is really an information management challenge.

Advertising in a Virtual World

Advertising is the biggest challenge that a creator faces in SL.  How to get the word out?  How to create a recognizable brand? How to promote your product?  There are several ways to go about this, but one of the emerging ways to advertise is through machinimas.

A machinima can be used as a virtual world commercial promoting your services, product, location, and/or brand.  It can demonstrate the capabilities of a product or create an environment in world.

One of the first machinimas I would like to present is from a real life company that came into Secondlife... Mercedes Benz.  Mercedes is a luxury car in real life, and is not easily available to all, but by coming into Secondlife, Mercedes has provided a way that the unatainable now becomes the attainable to just about everyone.

Is it fair that Linden Labs uses the splash screen to promote "Nautilus"?

Nope, it is unfair advantage over SL community--let them use classifieds

Sony and Microsoft commit to virtual world in 2008

AP reports from Japan electronics show now that:

Sony Corp.'s twice delayed online "Home" virtual world for the PlayStation 3 console will be available sometime later this year, while U.S. software maker Microsoft Corp., which competes with its Xbox 360, is starting "New Xbox Experience" worldwide Nov. 19.

Microsoft's service will be adapted to various nations, but people will be able to communicate with other Xbox 360 users around the world, according to the Redmond, Washington-based company.

Further the article adds In both Sony's and Microsoft's virtual worlds, players can personalize their avatars, choosing hairstyles, facial features and clothing. Akagawa said avatars will be able to dress up like heroes in hit video games.

Poll Results: Best thing in Secondlife is roll your own, can Linden grab the future?

Our readers/bloggers vote that best thing in Secondlife is the power to do you own thing--build or enhance the avatar. Roll your own mesh beats virtual sex...er...hands down. http://rezzable.com/poll/the-best-thing-about-sl

Lately, we have seen a lot of new virtual world platforms appear ( http://rezzable.com/blog/rightasrain-rimbaud/virtual-world-platforms-wat... )and the competition seems to be heating up. Nonetheless, the dedicated SL users (residents wtf) can sniff out the differences between the home we all love to hate and the newbie platforms stiff and bland. SL is like a dream still (ok sometimes nightmare) where you can roll your own virtual objects, build your own area--be a despot of your own realm.

Surfline's Maximillion Kleene Concert

Yesterday, June 5, 2008, we had a wonderful concert presented by Max Kleene. The opening show was by our very own Aerlinniel Vella, bringing us her wonderful mix of jazz. Then at 4pm SLT Max delighted our guests with his wonderful music. Definitely planning to book him again in the, hopefully, near future.

Leave it to newest release candidate to make my photos unusable, but luckily for me, sabra Hemingway took some great ones! Check them out here at Sabra's Flickr stream. As always, you can keep up to date with all the events Surfline offers by going to http://rezzable.com/calendar. See you at the next event!
