Update on BuilderBot Release

We have been working away to get perms implemented in the release version of BuilderBot. It seems to work ok, but there are some session issues that are a bit tweaky. In fact we sent a copy of the pre-release application over to Jack at LL last night. We would like to be among the first to have registered status for SL. There have been a lot of tech issues getting this to run smoothly -- makes us wonder if LL isn't messing around with something somewhere to block 3rd party applications completely.

LL's latest threat to kill accounts that use "unapproved" viewers has also stopped our testing on the SL grid for BuilderBot. No one, rightly so, wants to give LL a reason to delete their account (especially if they can copy their own stuff off the grid)

It would be hard to imagine though that LL would block the Libomv code base from running on the SL grid. I would have to imagine that move would break a ton of stuff. I further don't get this thing about texture files being switched around. That plan would seem to also have a massive negative impact on user experience. I don't think LL has sophisiticated enough tools to track viewer interactions and spoof the assets somehow. Probably they have some basic handshake between thier viewer and server that identifies the connection. That should be visible in the opensource code though.

So the larger issue here would seem to be whether or not LL is going to ban 3rd party viewers unless they are registered. Then the registered viewers cannot be opensource -- as the registration codes could then be reused easily enough. That all seems like a big mess and major step away from the opensource ambitions that Phil and Mitch started SL with. Maybe this is part of the why Phil left? This is certainly another example of why we are glad we already moved our stuff to our own OpenSim grid.

Stay tuned, more on BuilderBot release soon.
