when no news is the news we expect...

most people seem to think there is no news to announce...so they look like best people to not be disappointed. LL is making money--so what else needs to be said atm???

Whatever it is, it will be

Whatever it is, it will be something that doesnt make things better for SL residents HEY you never know they might be gonna use web cams to go with the very sucessful voice -_- bubye SL

my bet is on land

The trend in SL has been to decrease land prices... clearly they are trying to make it more affordable as land owners tend to have a bigger stake in the community and stick around more. So either they are going to make void sims open to all to buy (not just previous regular sim owners), or they are going back to a model of FREE land for premium accounts. Right now premium accounts are lame. So that's my guess.. reconnect Land and Premium accounts (void is wishful thinking) to encourage people to sign up for those monthly payments. Lucien Franciosa

What ever it will be it will be crap

THis announcemtn will be something that they think will be wonderful. But it will probally make SL even worse.

Real-time shadows.

Real-time shadows.

What would Mitch do?

On the options there:

OBJ support - this will come, just not yet.
Other worlds, even using sl codebase, have demonstrated it. Nobody yet however has solved the LOD (level of detail scaling) issue in a way that's elegant enough to acually use on a gridwide basis. Sculpties have LOD built in (which is why they're so damn hard to make). As for full meshes, other worlds do them but haven't hit the critical mass of SL where they need to start worrying about what their residents actually _do_ with them. In case anyone hasn't noticed every time sl gives us a new tool we use it to make LOTS OF LAG and meshes in their current form would make this infinitely worse.

Something about intergrid travel - kinda likely.
SL won't be selling land forever, at some point when we get it, they'll drop the land metaphor altogether. Then they'll start properly acting like a hosting solution and server farm provider. This was what it was like with the early web - hosting was initially botique magic, eventually bulk buy commodity. LL knows they'll be in that market as virtual worlds evolve and sooner or later will start rolling out the tools to stay in the middle of it and ensure the market doesn't run away to the straight farming solutions that all their competitors have been working on since SL hit the news as the "next big thing". We haven't seen anything _yet_ out of the IBM partnership that impacts our SL world, but likely when we do that'll be it. If the OSS kids can demo it, surely IBM has some code, special friend status and all.

SL iPhone client - not really news, but...
iPhone (and java/symbion phone) client has been demonstrated, and is basically a thin client solution so not nearly as radical as people like to think. Thin clients are dumb things that give you a virtual window into an application running elsewhere (probably on a server). So you can think of it as no more radical than pointing a webcam at a screen running sl and watching that on your phone, (except of course that you can move by pressing buttons, big woop). An actual lightweight client that ran completely on an iPhone _would_ be big news. Modern handlelds actually have enough grunt in them to run a cut down SL client, if one existed, but they'd need some backend help from Linden's servers to sort out what was important to display and what would just be fluff on those tiny screens. We haven't yet seen any evidence that LL is working in that direction, though they do tend to spring these things on us (like some kind of unexpected birthday present that if we knew it was coming we wouldn't have wasted the effort going out and getting our own).

Also, as some have noted, the only reason you can't run SL on an XBOX or PS3 is the user interface. The client compiles fine it's just messy to use with them handheld controllers. If they did announce XBOX or PS3 support the big news wouldn't be that they had done it, it would be that: A) they'd entered a gigantic new market, which would make the yahoo generation SL influx of early 07 look like chicken feed. B) that they had solved the easy user interface issue. Having the grid overrun with console monkeys would change things radically for us socially. Having an easy to use interface however (probably with that mac philosophy of hiding the complexity till you get more familiar) would be totally game changing. Migrated to the pc that user interface would reduce frustration for new users and probably vastly improve early hours newbie retention, not to mention lowering training barriers of entry for business or educational use.

Phil is getting new hair - I certainly hope so!
Let's face it, he looks like a californian version of the statue of liberty with a kerotin tan.

Something else - erm likely too.
It's highly likely that something completely leftfield would come out of LL at this point. We all know they are quite brilliant and thus quite mad. If they weren't so smart they'd be more predictable, and we wouldn't often be complaining that they're not doing the most sensible thing, but rather something that appears to have no acumen behind it. In the long run their decisions _do_ seem to make sense generally despite often appearing to be quite mad at the time of announcement.

As for the "something else" most popularly blogged lately, and IPO.... extremely unlikely. Companies do that if they need to expand rapidly using the mongolian hordes technique - but as we've seen the barriers to expansion for LL is not just buying more people and servers. Or they IPO because their revenue model is failing and they want to buy time for it to recover. We've also seen that LL can continue to turn a profit - after a year of straight losses maybe, a year of profit naah. They don't want to do many of the things their customers want, why would they suddenly decide to take on investors to please as well?

Well that's my two cents... I hope it makes sense. Pav.

a new viewer?

I bet they are going to announce that the RC viewer is now compulsory. Oh be still my pounding heart! Faerie

pav..is like 4 or 6 cents this week

pav...hope you not gonna ask for a raise now!

a new avatar mesh?

I hope...

new & improved avie mesh would be kewl!

Laiat, that depends. If that would render all 'old' textures to null, or they found a way to 'remap' those. (Lacking on official mesh terminology here, probably. :d) I would already be rather happy with an extra face layer (for makeup so it becomes not dependable on skin alone) BUT that would not be big news. Just something that was needed already a year ago.

It's just getting your face mapped onto an avatar...

Well, we all know Mitch Kapor has been working on that, now it's time to show it off, in colour and 3D!

big time anouncement

what id like is some way of blowing bvh files in in real time...with a loop out for force feedback...now that would be interesting..

Re bvh files in real time

Lindies have dusted off avatar puppeteering, which ties in with Mitch's recent acquisitions of technology for direct digitization of body movement via webcam code. That means waggle your arms in front of the pc and your av waggles its arms. It doesn't work great but is part of the way of the future.... it's getting the attention of devs at LL. For some info on avatar puppeteering look at http://www.avatarpuppeteering.com/ I believe we'll see the abilility to create animations in world reasonably soon (in LL terms) due to the work on this, as well as more solid and intuitive animation tools. LL has also acquired ragdoll physics modules which (like havok) can be distributed for free in a free client... so we know they're working along those lines.

Big announcement - Money

So, what kind of announcement does a venture capitalist make? My money is on money. I'm expecting the introduction of a foundation or fund, that will offer a yearly grant or grants (or 'prizes') to startups and/or non-profit organizations that are using (and promoting) Second Life in new ways.

RegAPI

Damanios, should they not just hire a few extra Lindens to work on the RegAPI. That would to the trick way better? ;) The Registration API is a beta program. Linden Lab is unable to provide support or technical advice, and the Registration API sample code and documentation require effort to implement successfully. We are limiting new Registration API accounts at this time to those who already have experience or who have the technical expertise to implement it without our support. The Registration API (RegAPI) provides you with two capabilities: * It allows you to customize the registration process. * It delivers registrants to an area of your choice in SL

RegAPI

Agreed, having unsubscribed from the regapi mailing group just yesterday, due to seeing not much happening, opening up the platform (and not just RegAPI but by getting the whole virtual world alternative to google's 'opensocial') would be infinitely more useful. Sadly, terms like RegAPI will get you blog posts on some SL related blogs, but won't get your press announcement on C-Net and in the wall street journal...

re damianos. money and regapi

The money to support interesting value-add SL projects isn't a bad suggestion. We already know that the lindens are looking to further support in world orientation and training folk, having realized that the residents do it a lot better than they can. I expect announcements on that front fairly soon. As for how else that could play out it would not surprise me if the lindens started actively funding in world actitivies. This is likely on two fronts: Firstly they realize that some of the groups which do the most for SL are getting fatigued from finding ways to generate cash for land as they expand, so devoting energy and resources to fundraising which would be better spent supporting the SL community and improving experience (which is their main focus). Secondly, they print their own money, so can distribute the cost of providing this community support (linden dollars and land) across the entire sl community. In world support groups really do work in an economy where the linden dollar is about the same value as the italian lire - a buck gets you a LOT of them. So for the cost of a single staff member at LL they could easily provide tens of sims worth of land and millions of lindies in support for folk who pretty much do it full time for free now (if not actually paying for the privilege of working!) I strongly suspect the lindens are moving towards this model of community support. But maybe not what Mitch would announce.... As for RegAPI - it's not so sexy but very much required. Nothing has happened on that front for a while.... however.... RegAPI is right smack bang in the middle of the cross worlds work that IBM and LL have been collaborating on. Perhaps we haven't seen progress on it yet because the IBM folk took one look at it and said "this is borked and kooky and needs refactoring" - highly likely. The IBM project is about making SL tech regular enough to survive off LL's grid, so I'd be surprised if they didn't have a hand in where RegAPI went at this point, given that they'reprototyping intergrid travel and registrations MUST be a part of that equation. RegAPI however isn't sexy enough on it's own I think to get Mitch in front of the whole of SL talking about it on it's own.... he'd have to explain too much and get too geeky for a general keynote address.

From the official

From the official blog.secondlife.com: To put to rest to some of that speculation— Mitch’s announcement will not be about strategic nor business issues regarding Linden Lab. Mitch’s announcement will be about a new program that recognizes the achievements of Residents in making Second Life a disruptive technology platform. So forget about that roadmap & clarity upon our future. :/ (Although I guess it could have been much much much worse? ;))

pls no more "help", more vision and hope

if help = more SL5B events and support for CSI promos...let's hope the don't offer too much more of that. LL is not rich in mgmt of inworld stuff--er...mainland? Plus the deeper they get into content creation of any kind, the more they start to compete or play favorites, which is the m.o. so actually why announce that anyway. Inter-grid stuff...is pretty esoteric really, considering only other grid is inside IBM's firewall and they don't want us to mingle inside big blue--and probably don't want all their blue-shirt dudes/gals "discovering" SL during office hours or spending company lindens on all kinds of stuff. Plus if inter-grid mean opening some of the SL platform functionality--like Lindex I would think it too risky to their revenue model atm. Visionaries should deliver vision at times of uncertainty. So, more likely something warm hearted and visionary--quote from Kapur I found on the web: MMOs/SL have "the potential to fundamentally change how humans interact" and may even "accelerate the social evolution of humanity." So maybe some announcement about education initiatives or linking offline communities is on offer.

Your Face on your AV.

The last thing I want to see is MY face looking back at me on my AV......I also wouldnt want to subject anyone else to it :)

They finally got bought by

They finally got bought by Google.

IPO

they offer us in world the first crack at the ipo, and its oversubscribed by 150% in a day......

Nigras

"Mitch’s announcement will be about a new program that recognizes the achievements of Residents in making Second Life a disruptive technology platform." I guess they are going to recognize the achievements of the foremost disrupters of Second Life (after LL themselves that is): the Patriotic Nigras. Henceforth known as the Patriotic Lindens.

I DONT KNOW BUT IM EXITED

LOL it would be verry ironic if philip Is getting a new hair. But i really Hope it will exist a SL iPhone Client. Im exited....

and the Big News is...

A yearly 10 000 USD (payable in LS) Award for ... sentence was a bit to long for my poor head to remember. Did anybody?

Thanks to Miss Beth Nemeth:

Annual Award for superlative achievement exemplify the mission "elevating the human condition" throught using Second Life

(PS. exemplify means, - I think - 'be characteristic of')

more info- dang she's quick...

At Massively by Tateru Nino.

Guess the first recipient

Lets see, xcite....no...maybe....uhhh..let me think....

Results are in!

Hooookay - Mitch has made his big announcement. Mis Tateru Nino has done a good analysis at Massively and the lindens have put up audio and video of the speech if you wish to check them out. Basically this "distruptive technology" thing he mentions means "products which completely change a market". He talks a lot about that and then drops the bomb - a yearly 10,000USD prize for elevating the human condition through Second Life. Not so terribly exciting in some ways - oh well. Positive however to put in place something which will generate media aboutpeople actually doing good things in SL, rather than playing Barbie or griefing (which seems to get the most press but isn't really playing on SL's strengths.) Also I think lovely to finally reward some residents for their hard work in building the platform into something useful - really it's us who makes it worth coming to SL. I'd like to see the first go to Heron Sanctuary, Virtual Ability or one of the other disability support networks, who' s support for some folk through SL has been truly life affirming.... but I digress... In the conversation above Damanios was the closest to hitting the nail on the head. Yes it was about giving out money to the community (in some form). My hat goes off to you sir for your insight :) Now I can only hope Laetizia Coronet isn't correct about the PN winning the prize lol. Just my two cents. Good day to all :)
