Cailyn Miller arrived in Second Life during beta test, way back in March 2003. She had been playing The Sims Online for a couple of months, but had gotten very bored with the lack of new content and so looked around for something similar. She found links to the beta tests of both There.com and Second Life, and signed up for both. SL was the first to respond and so this is where she ended up! Cailyn is now approximately 93 in SL years, but still looks like a fresh-faced 21 - such is the power of fresh air and makeup.
As SL was still in it's early days, the fashion scene had yet to get going. There were no skins, no prim hair, no prim shoes.. no sculpties and no flexi prims! System skirts had yet to be invented. When Cailyn started, there were maybe three places on the grid you could get clothes from - this slowly grew as more people signed up. Clothing was either photo-sourced or made from material swatches - very little of the hand-painted, shaded designs of today.
Cailyn decided to make clothing for herself. Armed with a copy of Paint Shop Pro that she really didn't know how to use, she worked on the clothing templates and slowly built up a small selection of items. Friends persuaded her to sell them, and so 'Cailyn's' the store was born.
Over the years, Cailyn has switched from clothing to her RL love of jewelry. She now uses a combination of Photoshop and Maya to create her textures, and happily spends hours fiddling with tiny prims to make pretty things to wear. She has a secret love of all things gothic, though most of her work is more mainstream. Cailyn gets inspiration from everywhere - she loves the 70's bright colours and plastics, the bold structured Art Deco.. anything that sparks a picture in her head.
Cailyn has heard many quotes about SL during her time there, but the one that sums it up for her is "Second Life - teaching the world to type one-handed.".
